Many people think of watermelons just as being something that tastes good and is full of water and sugar. However, watermelons are actually highly nutritious and have a variety of excellent medicinal properties. In fact, some experts rate it as one of the ten best foods. Watermelon is an excellent source of vitamin C, and it is also a very good source of vitamin A, notably through its concentration of beta-carotene. These powerful antioxidants travel through the body neutralizing free radicals, which are a leading cause of disease. Watermelons are also a very concentrated source of lycopene. In fact, recent research shows watermelons contain more lycopene than any other fresh fruit or vegetable, even tomatoes. Lycopene is well known for its ability to lower the risk of prostate cancer. Watermelon is also a good source of vitamins B1 and B6 as well as potassium and magnesium. Created September 30, 2006. |
