How to   Detect Cancer

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death despite decades of effort aimed at finding a cure. Although some progress has been made, there is still a long way to go before cancer can be considered generally curable.

Cancer is usually most curable when it it is detected sufficiently early. Although it is often difficult to detect, there are some obvious symptoms that might indicate the presence of cancer and make early treatment possible.

The American Cancer Society has identified seven symptoms which could be, but are not necessarily a sign of cancer and that everyone should be aware of. Being aware of these signs and seeking prompt medical advice should they appear could greatly reduce the death rate from cancer. They are:

1. A change in bowel or bladder habits

2. A sore that does not heal

3. Unusual bleeding or discharge from any place

4. A lump in the breast or other parts of the body

5. Chronic indigestion or difficulty in swallowing

6. Obvious changes in a wart or mole

7. Persistent coughing or hoarseness

Unfortunately, some cancers are very difficult to detect and there will be no obvious symptoms in some cases. For this reason, it is important to get regular medical checkups every few years, especially after age 50 or 60. Particularly important is to get a colon examination every seven to ten years, as colon cancer is one of the most common cancers, but one of the most easily cured if detected early. Likewise, breast and skin exams should be conducted every few years, as these are also easily detectable and curable in their early stages.

Along with being aware of these cancer warning signs, it is equally important to adapt a lifestyle that minimizes the risk of cancer. It is possible that a healthy lifestyle could cut the risk by at least half, and possibly as much as two thirds.
